These are independent studies of synthetic pheromone analogues as a category. They were not run on our product, and we do not claim their results as ours. We list them so you can read them yourself — the ones that worked and the ones that did not.

• Effect found

  In 1,060 cat and owner pairs, unwanted scratching fell over 28 days for 83.5 percent on the pheromone against 68.5 percent on placebo.

  Funded by the manufacturer Ceva, and three of the authors worked there. Strong design, interested sponsor.

• No effect

  A systematic review of the field concluded there was insufficient evidence for most uses in both cats and dogs.

  The authors found published success rates for urine marking overstated, because owners who dropped out were left out of the results.

• Effect found

  Dogs frightened of fireworks showed a significant improvement across several fear behaviours on dog appeasing pheromone.

  Owner-reported scoring, and a small group by modern standards.

  Dogs in long-term kennelling showed no significant change in stress behaviour on dog appeasing pheromone.

  A kennel is a hard case. It tells you where the ceiling is.

  A review for veterinary practice found the feline facial analogue can lower acute stress signs at the clinic and is unlikely to do harm.

  The same review says plainly it should not be the only thing you do.

• Weak evidence

  Across eight controlled studies, the evidence for dog appeasing pheromone in adult dogs was judged weak, with little carry-over once it stopped.

  Only four of the eight were randomised. The authors call it harmless and possibly useful, not proven.

• Effect found

  Cats travelling by car showed lower stress indicators with the feline facial analogue than without it.

  A pilot study, so small numbers.

  Cats with idiopathic cystitis had fewer symptom days on the pheromone, but the difference did not reach significance.

  A pilot with a trend, not a result. We include it because leaving it out would flatter us.
